Alternative Olympics Disqualification?
This off colour male American Goldfinch was on his own at the feeder because it seems he was thrown off the team for displaying using a third left wing in competition.
He flew easily with the extra wing in relays back and forth from lilac bushes to feeder. It was then the judges were able to photograph and document the infraction. Sorry for the fuzzy proof. It was taken through the doble glazed judging booth window.
Although both wings are flat against the body, this sneaky fellow was not able to make this short feathery wing lay down.
Until this finch undergoes a physical exam we will not know for certain if it is a third wing or a cluster of wing feather have grown out fron under his wing.
First we have to catch him. He seems to have returned to the woods where all the birds are waiting for the ice pellets and snow to stop.
