Potters Demo
by Mike Juniper.
He is showing me how to make a clay lid by throwing "off the hump".
First he elevated the clay into a tall spindle, makes a narrow neck near the top, then shapes the lid so the top knob is in the bottom of a saucer shape, as shown above.
He presses just so with his fingertips and the whole lid gracefully shifts/transforms from a saucer shape into a domed shape. Then he finishes up the knob, cuts the lid from the "hump" and trims out the excess spindle residue from underneath the lid.
He makes it look SO easy! (He's only been throwing clay for 40 years.)
Jay walked by just then and commented, "I tried to do that six times. Then I quit!"
