Hamilton Mausoleum

Built in the 1850's for the 10th Duke of Hamilton as a family chapel and tomb. Its dome is as high as Nelson's column and seen by thousand's of motorists daily from the nearby M74 motorway.

Such was the craftsmanship of the stonemasons, it is said only one ton of lime was used in the entire construction.

Famous for its echo the reverberation period of about 15 seconds makes it one of the longest echoes in any building.

Hamilton Palace - built 1695, demolished 1921. was nearby and on a scale equivalent to Buckingham Palace. The palace suffered from subsidence due to mine workings. The palace became a victim of its own size as the cost of upkeep became prohibitive. During the 1st World War the palace was used as a naval hospital. Demolition took place shortly after the palace was 'handed back'.

The stone in the foreground of the picture may be a remnant of the palace's foundations?
