You cant beat independently owned and run cafes. They are all so different and yet reassuringly similar. For example you know you will be able to get beans on toast or a bacon roll. But will the tea cost £1.10 or £1.20? Will the newspaper be a Sun or Mirror? The suspense is thrilling.

So if you see one of the big chain outlets near to an independent, make a B-line to the indie, I say.

Just as we left the friendly owner was standing on a chair chalking up the special of the day on the board: Fish, chips and mushy peas - £4.50. How's that for a bargain?
