Improving the performance of your sheep flock
was the workshop that I was running today. All the latest research and equipment to show to the farmers with an explanation as to why a more efficient sheep flock will lower the carbon footprint. All interesting stuff which went down very well with the sheep farmers who attended.
Here they are condition scoring (feeling how fat) the stock are. In the background is the electronic crush which will weigh the sheep and sort them into which are losing weight and which gaining, all very electronic if you have the money for the equipment. This lets the researchers look at feeding regimes and try to work out best diets for sheep. After this they looked at how a tag reader could be linked to your phone or ipad through an app, even the hill sheep farmers are being dragged into the computer age. All very interesting but I think they still prefer the paper and pencil method.
The Scottish Farmer press arrived unexpectedly and stayed for the duration which was a little concerning.
I was a little out of my comfort zone as this is not my usual topic but I was pleased it went down well.
Now I deserve a glass of wine
