A rainy day in Helsinki

We took advantage of the State Railways' offer of EUR 5 tickets and went to Helsinki for a day.

Saw a very interesting photograph exhibition at Taidehalli by Esko Männikkö. Some of the pictures there were quite disturbing, too, but good art is supposed to move you one way or the other.

At Kiasma, the Museum of Modern Art, there were the candidates for the Ars Fennica award on show - their work, that is. The public could vote for the artist they preferred. A voted for Pauliina Turakka Purhonen, whose powerful fabric sculpture is the motif in this blip. I voted for Riitta Ikonen, a photographer, whose portraits that mixed elements from the nature with the people portrayed, were refreshingly genuine.

We made some shopping, had a nice lunch at Restaurant Loiste, and took a train back just in time to see the bronze medal celebrations of the Finnish olympic ice-hockey team!
