A concrete love affair

Road archeology reading

Some lovely new reading material!

Two by John Minnis who wrote the book 'Carscapes' for an English Heritage project on the motor car.

Had an interesting look at 'The Great North Road Then and Now' ; it features some great (what I call) road archeology. It's amazing how many memories studying the routes and structures of this road can stir up both for writer and reader alike.

I was struck by how many places I've visited along it, and how many places have great memories attached. Like travelling north to Edinburgh with my friend Stewart in 2003, and stopping at many of the bypassed villages in Northumberland. Or how I used to walk over one of its many routes through Newcastle Upon Tyne to university every day.

Some memories leave me feeling less nostalgic for it, like almost getting stranded and having to miss an lovely meal thanks to flooding in Alnwick or suffering a breakdown near Leeds late at night in a rubbish Vauxhall many years ago.
