I haven't seen the film, but am engrossed in the book.

Trying not to think too hard about the fact that this is comparatively recent history and that at some point it was considered fairly normal for one person to own many others.

I've just read a part where the author describes his experience of being whipped for not whipping his fellow slaves hard enough.

Beggars belief.
