Tone...
It's what many musicians continually strive for...
It's why you buy a Steinway...or a Wal. And they're back at last!
The company has a long history, and the original guy died young. Pete "The Fish", one of the original team of luthiers continued on, but retired a few years ago (he was impossible to contact...no fax, no e-mail and rarely answered the phone). However - it is now resurrected (thanks to Spandau Ballet reforming, and the bloke off Eastenders needing a new one, 'cause he sold all his stuff.)
Maybe I should get a new fretless 5 string fro Christmas?
Even with the brilliant starting point, we still add more...with an all digital pre-amp and lots of goodies (although stick to an analogue octaver, beats digital every time). I have 96 memories in the pre-amp. I use 2.....
But the question is...does anyone notice? Probably not! One of the most famous (but unheard of) bass players, James Jamerson played on all the motown records in the 60's and 70's famously never changed his strings! His old Precision bass was said to have a warped neck and almost unplayable. He said "tone is in the fingers".
That's rubbish, I convinced myself my strings were done, and ordered new ones today. Bet you no-one hears the difference except for myself.
It's been a quiet and restful weekend for once, with no work (apart from more pottering with my netbook).
After I embarrassed myself, I even cleared my paperwork mountain this evening. Three sackfulls of rubbish, and smoke coming out of the shredder.
