Corfe Castle: Herdwick grazing on castle mound
Herdwicks, a very hardy breed of sheep, are found almost exclusively in the Lake District. They are known to have been established there since the 12th century, and may have been introduced to Britain even earlier by Vikings.
Beatrix Potter, who lived and farmed in the Lake District, was very fond of the breed. Their meat has a distinctive taste, and was served at the coronation banquet of Queen Elizabeth II.
