Sewing lesson

4years 130days

Katie started the day with her first sewing lesson. The wonderful Mouse House Creations run a really great weekly blog - "Kids Can Sew". We have talked about her having a go. She was nervous at first. We have only the full size sewing machine at the moment, and it daunted her a little. However curiosity got the better of her and she was keen to try. We decided she would sit on my knee and I would do the pedal, she would do the hands. She liked this idea, and its a compromise for now as we don't have her sewing area ready yet. We have had their print outs ready for a while, she's had a go at the cutting out activities. We have talked about the space, the safety. Today we moved on to the sewing, using the "sewing in straight lines" sheet. After 3 sets of the routine, she'd got it and was remembering to flick the lever, knew which way to turn the handwheel depending on whether she needed to raise or lower the needle. And quite impressively, her lines were straight! She is very proud of her first machine sewing - she's been showing it off at nursery today and as soon she got home to Granny & Grandad. Tomorrow we will be trying sewing angles & curves. She's hugely excited to progress on to making a simple little skirt. She has now got her eye on a half-size purple machine, her own little sewing table and a particular corner of our lounge.

She had homework from nursery which she did this morning too - to find and draw different shapes in the home. She found a circle, square, rectangle, star, triangle. I reminded her of oval, hexagon and octagon (as I could think of immediate examples I knew she could find!) and she went off hunting for objects. She drew them all, wrote the names and what object it was. She spent ages doing it, and really enjoyed it.

She got to nursery mid morning and spent most of the day outside. She was looking that wonderful "I've played outside for ages" dishevelled, slightly dirty, scraggly haired, and nicely tired out happy. She'd eaten mountains at nursery today, had no interest in her tea at home. Until cake came out for pudding.

We are having a couple of days away, after ballet tomorrow so see you all after the weekend!
