Another one bites the dust

As I sat in a classroom drawing pictures of popular characters for some first grade students, two of their classmates run in, out of breath from leaping up the stairs in a rush to share the big news: another chicken was found dead in the chicken coop- headless. Gasp!

Apparently since summer there has been a massacre of the chicken population that the school (attempts to) cares for. A wild weasel is behind the devastation, taking one life at a time. Now we are only left with a rabbit.

I went out to the garden to help the vice-principal bury the poor, headless chicken. He let some of the big kids come down and say a prayer for the chicken before we put it in the ground.

I heard it's illegal to bury animals, but putting them in the trash just doesn't seem right.
