Tyneham: Post Office Row & St Mary's church
Just beyond the village pond is Post Office Row, a now roofless terrace of houses which included the village Post Office.
St Mary's church dates back to the 13th century. Occasional church services are held there, and the building houses a wealth of information about the history of the village and its former inhabitants.
The villagers were evacuated in late 1943, as preparations for D-Day were being made and a tank exercise range was needed. On the church door was left this message:
"Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly."
