My Life in A&E

By gilvratina

I had a few shots to choose from today, but I like this one because of the different shades of green on the central tree - new growth. Nice.

This was taken during a small Saturday excursion to the Waldfriedhof (cemetery in the forest).

First thing to say is that it's massive. Second thing is that there are a million trees. Third thing is that the gravestones are really quite different in style from the ones you see in the UK.

Perhaps the most interesting thing was how the style of gravestones / grave markings changed from area to area - some had big stones where many members of a family could be buried and then others had smaller stones and less space between the plots and some had wooden crucifixion things with a sort of roof over them like the ones you see when you're walking in the mountains in Bavaria.

Perhaps the most moving were the small square plaques, placed around the flower beds in the ornamental gardens and bearing just names and dates, which I assumed were for those who had been cremated.

It was a thought-provoking and culturally enriching afternoon out, I reckon.
