The Boys in the Boats
One of the best books I have read in a long time is "The Boys in the Boat" which details the story of the University of Washington 8-man rowing team that took gold in the 1936 Olympics. These young men were the sons of fishermen, lumbermen and warehouse workers and they took on the East Coast elite where rowing had long been a tradition. The team then took on the world at the Berlin Olympics. The book is enthralling and touching.
Rowing has a long history here in Seattle and when I saw the rowers working out this morning, I could envision the honorable young men who took on the world and Hitler.
Read the book by Daniel James Brown before the movie version comes out.
