The Carrick Stone, Cumbernauld
For many people Cumbernauld is a New Town, designed in the 1950's and built initially in the 60's - 80's for the overspill population of Glasgow. In fact the town is still growing, judging by the number of new developments around the place.
However the original Comar-nan-allt (meeting of the waters) goes back much further in history. The Roman Antonine Wall runs nearby, and there are the remains of Roman forts at Bar Hill, Twechar and Croy Hill.
Meanwhile, the Carrick Stone in Cumbernauld (see photo) is said to be a Roman altar dating from the mid-2nd century, when the Antonine Wall was being built and the forts inhabited. There is also a suggestion that Robert the Bruce, Earl of Carrick (hence the name) raised his standard here on his way to Bannockburn (about 10-12 miles to the east).
Cumbernauld may be a New Town, but remnants of the past remain.
