Nerine Sarniensis - Red Flowered Guernsey Lily
- from southern Africa
- this genus is an autumn-flowering member of the amaryllis family
- mostly dormant during the warm dry months,
- the leaves or flower buds on this plant do not appear until late summer when the days shorten
- the common name Guernsey lily and the genus name Nerine (from the sea nymph Nereis) recall how bulbs were found growing wild on the island of Guernsey, possibly having floated in from a shipwreck
