Paleys Upon Pilers (Pallace Upon Pillars)

Turns out that this a temporary structure, built for the Olympics, in Aldgate, London. Aldgate was the original Eastern gateway to the walled city of London.

It's basically a fancy timber palace perched on 10ft high pillars that commemorates Geoffrey Chaucer, who lived here between 1374 and 1386.

‘Paleys Upon Pilers is an abstraction of the uppermost room of the old gate house, an evocation of Chaucer’s luxurious dreamed temples and, like a dressmaker’s bust, is a ghostly base over which new dreams and imaginings can be overlaid.’ Very deep.

It seems to make sense when you see the huge 'temples' to commerce in the background.
