Red Road Flats, Balornock and Barmulloch, Glasgow.

Glasgow's famous/infamous Red Road flats are being demolished over a prolonged period which started in 2011 and is estimated to take seven years to complete - ironically, the same length of time it took to construct them. The buildings are riddled with asbestos, all of which has to be removed prior to the commencement of demolition works.

As fire protection, the architects specified asbestos to encapsulate the steel columns and beams throughout. At the time local residents nicknamed construction workers the ‘White Mice’ as they emerged from the partly constructed buildings with their overalls covered in asbestos fibres. Knowing what we know now about the severe health dangers of this material you can't help but fear for those workers.
