Papagayo
Wednesday
Once our rental car was available at around 10.30, we set off for Playa Blanca, a resort close to the most southerly point of the island. We walked along the promenade and back through the town, before having lunch at one of the restaurants on the front. Then we drove out to the nearby Papagayo Beach, one of about half a dozen beaches in the protected area of the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches, and considered by many to be the most beautiful beach on Lanzarote. The road to get there is by a bone-shaker of a dirt road, and there is a small access fee, but it is well worth it. The beach is beautiful and sheltered form the prevailing winds. There is a small cafe on the top of the low cliff overlooking Papagayo, whereas the other beaches in the preserve have no facilities at all. You can also reach the beach by water taxi from Playa Blanca. After a couple of hours on the beach, we went for a walk on the cliffs above, taking pictures, then as we left in the car, we checked out a couple of the other beaches, one of them being a lovely long stretch of golden sand.
