Isaac Watts Memorial
Worked a little later than usual today and had to walk through Watts (West) Park to get the bus home. It was around 6:10pm and the street and park lights were just coming on.
I decided to take a photo of Watts Memorial and as I didn't know the history of it, I looked into it when I got home. Here are some details for those who may be interested.
Isaac Watts is one of Southampton’s most famous son’s. He was famous as an author, educator, philosopher and hymn writer. Born in 1674, he lived at 41 French Street and was educated at the nearby King Edward VI Grammar School. He was one of the leading nonconformists in the town and is mainly remembered for his hymns which include ‘Our God, Our Help in Ages Past’ which is chimed on the Civic Centre clock at 8.00 am, noon and 4.00 pm.
The memorial was built by public subscription and unveiled in 1861.
