Nearly finished reading this classic biography of an officer fighting in the Western Front. It's never clear what he is fighting for or why the conflict went on for so long, which is presumably what the majority of participants on both sides experienced. As the situation in Ukraine develops, the role played by what we consider to be European history in shaping current events becomes ever so clearer
