The Ghost Rd
Up ealry’ish and away by 8.30 (late’ish) to drive up to near Reefton to bike the southern end of the Ghost Rd. It’s a track in development, funded by donations and volunteers.
I didn’t rush up as the weather wasn’t looking so flash, and I thought I’d start riding after the main rain was gone. Plan!
Arrived just after 12, on the track at 12.45, amid sand-fly city, Wowsers, crazy thick!
Beautiful track, steadily uphill for nearly 18 km to the Lyell Saddle Hut. Mostly through the beech forest, and a nice leafy “footpath”. But, in areas steep rock bluffs, that were decidedly dodgy!
Made it to the hut after 2 hours, an hour or so to look around and then down. Theoretically fine, however the weather moved back in and an 75 mins later I made it back to the bottom, slightly chilled I’d have to say.
Then across to the coast to stay with a friend. Fab night on the deck, a lovely dinner and chilling.
Special.
