St Michael the Archangel Chapel

This chapel was built in 1890 and is at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney. The angel was destroyed by lightning on a couple of occasions (the weather has no respect). This angel has a lightning arrestor so may ward off the storms!

In 1862 the government purchased 80 hectares of land at Haslem's Creek and this became Rookwood Cemetery (or officially Rookwood Necropolis - city of the dead).

I find cemeteries are quite fascinating; in one way, especially the wealthy, wish to maintain a permanence but the reverse seems to be the reality.

My uncle was buried at Rookwood over 100 years ago at aged 3 but there is currently no headstone, however we know where his grave is located.
