Railings and wall

We have mahogany banisters and rails which I've wanted to paint for some time. So now that Spring is here I went to the paint shop asked about primers/ oil v water based paint, bristle v synthetic brushes and so on. Can I really face painting all those spindles? Might get a few quotes from local decorators.

Meanwhile the colours on these railings caught my eye.
