Words

We were in Keswick this afternoon, as I was going to a talk, part of Keswick’s Words by the Water Literature Festival. This seems to get bigger every year and the brochure is full of all sorts of people talking about all sorts of things during the next week or so. The talk I went to was a short one about contemporary literature. It was interesting, but too short. I/we will be returning for slightly longer talks during the weekend and next week.

It all takes place at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake and what better place could there be, right on the shores of Derwentwater.

Afterwards we walked to Friar’s Crag, which is where everyone walks to and takes photographs. The chocolate box view is very obvious, but still stunning. Not today though! It was a lovely day, but a lot of cloud and a haze over the hills. So no view really. Instead, this is at the same place and is a memorial to John Ruskin who had a lot of links with Keswick. And, as he is quoted as saying, this view (behind me as I took the picture) was one of his earliest memories. He also wrote a lot of words.
