Shrove Tuesday

Its pancake day.......the begininning of Lent.......so we celebrated by preparing dessert on our 'do it yourself table top crepery!!!'

They were absolutely delicious!

So what are the origins of Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday?

For me it has always been heavily linked with Passover.

Before Pessach (Passover) a Jewish home would be cleared of all leaven. All that was collected would then be burned. The resultant ashes would be taken outside the home and buried. Pessach would proceed for the next 8 days using only unleavened bread.

I lived and worked for several years in an area where only unleavened bread was available for 8 straight days........and believe me.....we would race down to the local bakery at sunset on the 8th day just to smell the aroma of newly leavened loaves and take the first bite of a freshly baked shabbat loaf!

Think the biblical reference to Christians being the leaven (in the lump!) takes on a whole new meaning when you realise its the presence of yeast that gives that amazing aroma!

Who'da thought GK posing so happily as a wannabe chef would draw such depth of opinion on the celebration of the humble pancake!!!

Happy Blipping Everyone
