Lindean Loch Local Nature Reserve
Lindean Loch, near Selkirk, looks natural, but it was largely dug by hand in the 18th century to extract lime rich marl (clay) for use as a fertiliser on grass fields to improve the grazing. The lime rich water and soil make Lindean Loch unusual for Scotland, and over 600 plant and animal species have been found in and around the loch; a diversity that led to it being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1977.
Lindean Loch is part of the Whitlaw Mosses National Nature Reserve managed by Scottish Natural Heritage.
It was incredibly windy today. When I took shelter in the bird hide, it was shaking alarmingly so I retired to the safety of outdoors.
