in front of a roaring log burner, newly lowered to floor height! It used to be on a 1970s fashion ledge at least 10cm (more like 15cm) above floor height. No wonder it was never that warm because hot air only rises. It has to be burning properly, seasoned timber dry stuff, if it's not it wouldn't burn or get hot enough.
