Limulus polyphemus

the horseshoe crab:
not a true crab, more closely related to spiders and scorpions,
considered a living fossil,
(note the resemblance to a trilobite).

Today I was sick of cat pictures, which is the majority of subject matter round here, the light was "flat" due to sulfite haze and humidity, I'm kind of in a weird mood, and horseshoe crabs have been around for millions and millions of years which seemed to have an appeal today as I feel kind of impermanent and terminally mortal after working in the hospital all weekend.

We found this exoskeleton at the beach last summer and brought it home because it didn't smell anymore. It sits in the mudroom next to the back door.
