The Derby Ram
'As I was going to Derby
Upon a market day
I saw the largest ram, sir,
That ever was fed on hay.'
Derby has changed considerably over the years since our family moved there in 1960. Mickleover was just a village, rather than a suburb, on the edge of open fields and countryside which was ideal for my brother and me to play in and explore. The golf course, which was perfect for sledging in winter, has now been built over, along with much of the surrounding area.
But many of the changes have been for the better, and the town still has a very strong sense of its own identity. I came across this sculpture just behind the bus station, where a Riverside Walk has been developed along the stretch of the Derwent that runs through Derby - a welcome green space in the city.
