The Royal Exchange
The Royal Exchange, officially opened in 1571 by Queen Elizabeth I, was a commercial market place that consisted of a trading floor, offices and shops around an open courtyard where merchants and traders could meet and conduct their business. It was unfortunately destroyed by fire twice, first by The Great Fire of London in 1666 and then in 1838.
The present Royal Exchange building, opened by Queen Victoria in 1844, was designed by the English architect Sir William Tite.
Today this elegant building is home to some of the most well known luxury brand names in the world: Tiffany & Co., Hermes, Theo Fennell, Montblanc, Paul Smith, De Beers and many more.
With its combination of expensive shopping, elegant architecture and superior food and drink, Royal Exchange attracts bankers with big pay packets and bonuses!
