Guga....in a box!
I was cleaning out the cupboards this afternoon and I found this!
Guga is a young Gannet. Some folks have tried to ban the practice of going out on the Guga Hunt but the 'hunters' have a quota of 2000 to be caught over a fortnight. Its an ancient tradition and the men of Ness go out every year to get them.
Gannet numbers have increased on Sulasgeir year on year....
Strangely, Gannets were eaten by the good folks of Edinburgh in the 1700's that came from the Bass Rock. It was food.
Now it's a delicacy and every September they are eagerly awaited by the Niseachs!
Anyway instead of this one getting boiled up for tea, it got wrapped up and put back in the cupboard for later!
