Spon-taneous Meat-ing

We visited Coventry this morning (I'm a Freeman of the City of Coventry don't you know - yes really), and while there we had a stroll down Spon Street. Spon Street became a popular place to live and work in the 1700's because of the success of Coventry's watch-making industry.

Spon Street has the most eclectic mixture of buildings that you could find, ranging from mediaeval to ultra-modern, and you can also find there St John the Baptist Church which was founded in 1344.

There is also an extensive range of shops with Ikea situated just off from the street, to a teddy bear shop, to a hi-fi specialist, and then this fantastic traditional butchers. As you can see, the frontage of the butcher's shop is very narrow, but there is a long rear wing. This shop dates back to the 19th century.

The butchers were absolutely charming and were quite happy to come and pose outside for a photo-shoot. They also showed us pictures of the street as it has changed down the ages.

Best sausage for dinner tonight!
