Ice paths no more...

Today I travelled inland to Östersund, which lies on the shores of a very big lake. Mid Sweden University's third campus is here and I was here for a workshop about online teaching and learning.
This photo is taken from the nearby island of Frösön towards Östersund. I've walked over a bridge and around the shore to get here but it would be much quicker to cross the ice and this is exactly what people did during the winter. The path you see on the right is an "official" path maintained by the council; I'm not sure about the one on the left.
The first sign you can see suggests you should have your "ice spikes" with you when you are out on the ice. These are 2 spikes, each with a handle, which hang around your neck, easily accessible. If you fall through you can grab the spikes and stick them in the ice and pull yourself out. Easy and cheap life insurance even if (like me) you carry them for years without ever falling through.
However, the season now seems to be over. The ice is too weak and no-one seems to be chancing it.
