Water tower

The water tower is built in 1951 by the construction bureau of mines. This provided both the aboveground and the underground company of the Oranje Nassau I mine of water, required for numerous activities and work (think e.g. to the dust control underground). Architect was Mr. A. Stevens, while Mr. E. Vickers the structural calculations made. The tower is, measured above the surrounding terrace, 36 meters high. The top of the tower is 144 metres above sea level. The water tank has a diameter of 10.5 metres and can contain 650,000 gallons of water.

The municipality of Heerlen bought the Tower in 1974 of the ON-mines. By selling the water company he is now in use at Water piping Society Limburg. The Tower consists of a nearly cylindrical brick housing. This is the classic form of a water tower which is a large outdoor water tank seen remained invisible high lifted out. The masonry Tower has an exciting slightly curved shape because the diameter goes from 13 feet to 12 feet in this way, the perspective distortion somewhat exaggerated. The Tower partly consists of a hollow space. On the inside, a staircase winds upwards to a floor applied under the reservoir. Through a central spiral staircase is from this floor the lid of the reservoir. Below the level of the ground floor there is a space constructed with pump drains to a sump.

Architectural design of the facade is the interesting architecture. The facade has at the top around 12 bow Windows which is at the bottom extends its fields with small savings. The shaft has four vertical superimposed Windows that are shifted relative to each other. The basement is equipped with 8 openings, consisting of 7 Windows and the entrance. The detailing of the Windows and the entrance with stairs party give the whole a monumental status. Striking is the arched Corbel course, the children's signs eaves and the little lantern as crowning achievement on the roof. Unfortunately, the special architectural appearance nowadays disturbed by the many GSM antennae.
