Braced
A Northern Flicker having her way with my suet window feeder. The woodpeckers have recently realized this suet exists, and so the cake is dwindling much faster now. This is a special bird because she is a hybrid--part Red-shafted (the western subspecies) and part Yellow-shafted (from the east). This is because she has features of both subspecies: a red-shafted face and yellow-shafted underwings. Such flicker intergrades are regularly found here but pretty uncommon. I had never seen one until this fall, and now I'm being treated to fantastic views.
