Untenable Position
Following my release on bail from the court the next morning, I repaired to the Davenport to take stock and recover my shocked nerves from the previous nights indignities. To my annoyance, but not, I confess, my surprise, I found my valise lying at the foot of the stairs just within the main entrance. The formidable housekeeper, a Ms Henderson, stuffily told me that my room had been double-booked and the other booking, anteceding my own, took precedence. My protestations fell on deaf ears. I left without causing a scene and wandered the turgid streets. Eventually I took a room at a much less savoury boarding house, The Ullman Hotel. It was grim in the extreme.
