The Outcast Dead
A rather quaint term for prostitutes in medieval London was the ‘Winchester Geese‘. The reason being that the brothels that served Londoners on the south side of the Thames, in the district of Southwark, fell under the Bishop of Winchester... The ladies plied their trade and unfortunately on occasions contracted and spread venereal disease. Getting a dose of the clap was often referred to as getting bitten by a winchester goose or getting Goosebumps... When these geese died, they had the final indignity of being buried in unconsecrated ground. The Cross Bones graveyard in Southwark has been preserved by local residents and a little memorial set up to commemorate the Winchester Geese.....
Today myself and Jinglyjan and two lovely ladies Amanda and Claire travelled up to london to visit and remember the unfortunates.. There wasn't an awful lot to see a fence with ribbons and gifts and kind words but still i'm glad i had the chance to see it for myself... We also had a lovely walk round and managed to take plenty of photo's of the Shard .. The Shard, through a gap, the Shard at the end of a road, The Shard through another gap... I'm obsessed with the Shard! I had to blip Cross Bones Cemetery and not the Shard. After all this is the reason we had our lovely day out in our glorious capital....
I'm shattered and need my bed so will bid you all a good night and hope you all have a happy saturday..
