Man getting into a trance
Today, I experience a most fascinating Thai event.
Wat Bang Phra, west of Bangkok, is a well-known place for its magic tattoos. In Asia, tattoos are a cultural fact. In Thailand, many people, males or females, bear tattoos for religious purposes. The monks of Wat Bang Phra are renown for the magic of their tattoos.
Once a year, there is a festival there to renew the magic of the tattoo bearers. This was the day.
So I went there with some friends to record the event in photos. It was absolutely stunning!
A large crowd of believers were sitting on the temple esplanade for this occasion. All of a sudden, one, two sometimes many people at the same time would get into a trance and become wild for a few minutes. They would first start shouting wildly, stand up and get tense before starting running blindly straight ahead. A group of men - standing there for this purpose - would stop there from running too far ahead. A minimum of three men, sometimes four or five would be necessary to stop the person in trance. One of the caretaker would then press his fingers on the possessed man behind his ears to calm him down. Then the tranced man would calm down a few minutes later and become normal again.
The man on the photo is just about to start his wild run forward and I had to stay aside quickly if I didn't want to be run over!
This link shows how the sacred tattoos are made by the monks.
