On Haystoun Estate....

Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) in Inferno : Canto III, arrives at the gates of hell.

“THROUGH me you pass into the city of woe:
Through me you pass into eternal pain:
Through me among the people lost for aye.
Justice the founder of my fabric moved:
To rear me was the task of Power divine, 5
Supremest Wisdom, and primeval Love. 1
Before me things create were none, save things
Eternal, and eternal I endure.
All hope abandon, ye who enter here.”

(Note that the word "all" refers to "hope" and not to "ye" - in spite of how we always say that phrase.)

Personally, I think that is the least welcoming gate post I've ever seen....
