High Insect Culture

I was very surprised to spot this wasp nest, high in a maple tree above 48th Street, just below Baltimore Avenue. It must have been there since last summer. I don't know much about paper wasps, but this seems like an unlikely spot for a nest. It looks to be the size of a soccer ball.
