Cataract Surgery, #Bangladesh
The World Health Organisation estimates that cataract is responsible for 51% of world blindness, which is roughly 20 million people. Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness throughout the world. Although cataracts can be removed with a straightforward operation, in many developing countries people don't have access to this surgery.
IMPACT's Jibon Tari floating hospital in Bangladesh provides cataract operations free of charge to impoverished people living in rural communities, who would not otherwise be able to seek medical attention. Since 1999, over 25,000 people have had their sight restored on board.
