Native Squirrel.
There has been a colony of red Squirrels in this area for at least 70 years. The conifer woodland was planted at the turn of the last century to stabilize the extensive sand dunes and thus protect farm land. Now the National Trust, English Nature, the Local Authority, and The Forestry Commission all work locally to protect this unique coastal area.
It is said that red squirrels escaped from captivity in a local property early last century, this may be a local myth. Over the past 20 years the population declined due to squirrel pox. Thankfully the numbers are increasing now, due to careful management by the National Trust. For more detailed information see HERE.
