Fort la Latte, Brittany
The tour of breathtaking Brittany continues - I only wish I could do it justice with my camera. On Friday we made our way to the forbidding Fort la Latte, a fort castle that's been a mainstay of northern Brittany's landscape for the past 6 centuries, give or take a half century or so. Despite the wind which was as menacing as the fort's oubliette*, I enjoyed being able to explore the medieval gardens and castle. The short climb up one of the turrets afforded great views of Cap Frehel and the Emerald Coast where the fort is strategically located to protect the nearby town of Saint Malo from the English and other enemies. Since becoming a place of historic interest in the 1920s, Fort la Latte has featured as a backdrop in quite a number of films including The Vikings and The Three Musketeers.
*An oubliette is a a dungeon accessed by a high trapdoor ceiling, from the French 'oublier', meaning to forget - basically, not really something you want to end up in.
