March 17th 2009 - Chimborazo
We were heading out for a mountain bike ride today and on the way we got to stop off at an amazing viewpoint of Chimborazo. Chimborazo is a currently inactive stratovolcano, with its last eruption taking place in 550AD. It has a peak elevation of 6, 268 metres, making Chimborazo the highest mountain in Ecuador. While Chimborazo is not the highest mountain by elevation above sea level, it is widely reported that due to its location along the equatorial bulge its summit is the furthest point on the Earth’s surface from the Earth’s centre. It is also where my favourite picture ever taken of me was. However, I decided to ditch the picture of me for Chimborazo in all its glory. Good idea, don’t you think?
Mountain was really good fun, surrounded by phenomenal scenery and a unique landscape compared to what we had seen before on this trip. Bruno, Camilla, Mia, Josefine and I went slowly at the back, chatting and chilling and even getting attacked by a stick when we scared a ladies sheep! We had a lovely fishy lunch and visited a lovely lake before it started to rain and it was time for us to head back. Back at the hostel we partially flooded the bedroom, meaning showers in other rooms, before a pork shop tea and watching Forrest Gump under duvets.
