Yay it's Wednesday!

.. .. .. .. Wednesday morning being paddling morning, I was out on Lyttelton Harbour with the Wednesday Morning paddlers, part of the Canterbury Sea Kayak Network. We paddled over to Quail Island (see the map), past the caves and along under the cliffs, shown here in this image. More cliffs +tiny kayaker.

Known by Maori as Ōtamahu, Quail Island has had a fascinating history. As well as having been a farm, it's also been a one time leper colony and was once used for training of the dogs used in Antarctic expeditions of the early 20th century. These days it's being extensively planted with natives, is visited by many over the warmer months and is appreciated hugely by kayakers. We sometimes celebrate Christmas together there, staying overnight.
