Or Whin is in flower again brightening up the countryside. I tried to grow cabbages one year and they were completely eaten by slugs. I said to the local ranger that I didn't like to use slug pellets as they could kill the birds and I didn't really want to kill the slugs either. His advice was to surround the veg and fruit beds with branches of gorse, which I did and it worked. I just dig a little trench so it doesn't blow away and place branches all round.
