Young scholar, Greenhead Street, Glasgow.

This statue is at the former Greenview School on Greenhead Street opposite Glasgow Green. The building, which was originally the mansion of the cotton baron, Dugald McPhail, dates from 1846. In 1859 the Glasgow merchant and philanthropist James Buchanan left £30,000 for its conversion into a school, known as the Buchanan Institute, to provide education and industrial training for destitute boys. The year after the education act of 1872, which made education compulsory, the 'Young scholar in studious pose', was carved in sandstone by William Brodie and placed on top of the building which has now been converted into flats.
