Gum nuts

This time of the year is our autumn (fall) season and the gum trees (eucalyptus) flower in profusion. This particular one is more of a shrub size and does not grow to a great height as do some of the others.
Looking at the photo you can see the bright red flowers and when they die off they leave the cone behind known as gum nuts. These are often used for ornamental decorations although environmentalists are discouraging the collections of these cones which is disappointing for local artists.

The flowers come in red, orange, pink and white. I have on occasions, even seen them in a deep yellow colour.
